The Radical SR3 Trophy arrives at Hockenheim today with a new leader and fewer and fewer opportunities to recover lost points. Gonçalo Brites leads the standings with 219 points, but Rúben Brites scored the most points at Oschersleben and heads into the third round 26 points behind. One driver’s consistency now meets the pace demonstrated by the other, on a night that could reshape the title showdown at Road Atlanta.
The second visit to Germany marks the start of the second half of the trophy. Four races remain, two of them tonight, and Oschersleben showed how a single round can shake up the battle.
Rodrigo Ferreira, who left Mosport in the lead, missed the second round and remained on 122 points. Gonçalo seized the opportunity using the same approach that had already worked for him in Canada: he has yet to win, but has never finished lower than fifth. He added a fifth and a second at Oschersleben to his fourth and third at Mosport. Four consistently strong results took him to the top.
It is an advantage built across both races each evening. That is the balance his rivals will have to counter at Hockenheim.
Rúben responds as Botelho joins the battle
While Gonçalo left Oschersleben with the lead, Rúben left with good reason to challenge for it. He took pole position, won the first race with a 2.124-second advantage over Rodrigo Teixeira and returned to the podium in the second, climbing from eighth to third.
His haul of 132 points was the highest of the round. After a quieter start at Mosport, Rúben moved into second place in the trophy and arrives at Hockenheim with a question to answer: can he repeat the performance that put him back in contention?
But the fight at the front is not limited to the two Brites. Rodrigo Teixeira is third in the standings, following up his win and podium in Split 2 at Mosport with a second and a fourth at Oschersleben. The competitive context changed, but he remained among the leading contenders.
Just behind is Luís Botelho, with 174 points, boosted by victory in the second race of the last round. He started second and finished ahead of Gonçalo and Rúben Brites, with the top three separated by just over two seconds. After seventh place in the opening race, the second start gave him the opportunity to turn his evening around.
António Abreu completes the top five with 165 points. Although he has yet to take a podium in this trophy, he has maintained a run of finishes between fourth and seventh. In a competition where several of the fastest drivers have already dropped important points, that consistency keeps him close to the battle.
Two races to set up the finale
The other side of that consistency was also evident at Oschersleben. Tiago Pina reached the podium in the first race but failed to finish the second. Azra do Carmo endured a difficult round, with a 22nd-place finish followed by a retirement. Hockenheim offers both a chance to respond, although only Road Atlanta remains after tonight.
The format that has helped spread the opportunities remains unchanged: fixed setups, two 20-minute races and a reversal of the top eight for the second grid. Qualifying can make the start of the evening easier, but it does not finish the job. Rúben had to fight his way back in the second race at Oschersleben; Botelho made the most of his starting position to win. The same reversed grid can create an opportunity or complicate the task.
Qualifying is scheduled for 21:30, with the races planned for 21:50 and 22:15, mainland Portugal time.
Gonçalo Brites arrives with a lead built on consistency. Rúben arrives after his best round. Rodrigo Teixeira, Luís Botelho and António Abreu remain close enough to make it risky to focus solely on the top two.
Today, Hockenheim decides the margin — and the pressure — each driver will take into the finale.
