Road Atlanta decides the Radical SR3: Rúben Brites leads as Gonçalo seeks a response

A week ago, Rúben Brites had 26 points to make up. Today, he has 46 to defend. His double win at Hockenheim changed the course of the Radical SR3 Trophy and put him in the strongest position for tonight’s decider at Road Atlanta.

But a lead is not yet a title. Two races remain, a maximum of 150 points are available, and six drivers still have a mathematical chance of winning the trophy. After Mosport, Oschersleben and Hockenheim, the fourth and final round offers no further opportunity to prepare for the next event. Whatever remains undecided must be settled today.

Hockenheim shifted the pressure

Rúben did not take the lead simply because his rivals had one poor result. In the last four races, he won three and finished the other in third. His fightback began at Oschersleben and gathered momentum at Hockenheim, where he became the first driver to win both races of a round in this trophy.

In the first, he beat Rodrigo Teixeira by 3.491 seconds. In the second, he had to start eighth and work his way back to the front. Not even the reversed grid interrupted an evening that earned him all 150 available points.

Gonçalo Brites experienced the other side of that shift. Until then, he had never finished lower than fifth and led through consistency. At Hockenheim he was fifth in the first race but dropped to ninth in the second. He scored 78 points; Rúben gained 72 on him in a single evening.

That difference explains the reversal of roles. Rúben arrives at the finale with 343 points, Gonçalo with 297. The driver who could previously build his championship through consistency now needs to make up ground. The driver who had been on the attack can begin weighing each risk against the standings.

For Gonçalo, winning alone is not enough: he also needs rivals to finish between him and the leader. For Rúben, the challenge will be to ensure that the desire to extend his winning streak does not jeopardise the advantage he has earned.

The finale is not just about the top two

Rodrigo Teixeira arrives in third with 265 points, having experienced both sides of this format at Hockenheim. He took pole position and finished second in the first race, but ended the next in 15th. The speed was there; what was missing was an equally strong performance across both races.

Luís Botelho sits just ten points behind on 255. After his win at Oschersleben, he climbed from 17th to eighth in the first race at Hockenheim and finished fifth in the second. The battle for third place is open — and both could still benefit from a difficult finale for the Brites.

António Abreu, with 226 points, and Rui Silva Vieira, with 201, complete the group still mathematically in the title fight. They need a more demanding combination of results, but also have positions to defend against each other and those behind them.

Other drivers can influence those calculations without being in contention for the trophy. João Pedro Sousa left Hockenheim with a sixth place and a podium; Azra do Carmo responded to his difficult Oschersleben round with two fourth places. Miguel Cardoso finished third and second, although he was not awarded points towards the standings.

In a finale, drivers fighting for a win do not have to make way for those fighting for the championship. Every position these drivers take could prove decisive for the title contenders.

Road Atlanta demands confidence — and judgement

The American circuit adds its own challenge to the decider. The elevation changes, the Esses and the approach to the fast turn 12 require drivers to commit before the entire exit is visible. The long straight between turns 7 and 10 offers a different kind of battle, ending in a heavy braking zone where choosing the right moment to attack will be crucial.

With the Radical SR3 and fixed setups, finding a rhythm will be as important as maintaining it when another car occupies the preferred line. For the title contenders, an overtaking attempt carries two values: the position it could gain and the points it could cost.

The format remains two 20-minute races, with the top eight reversed for the second start. Qualifying is scheduled for 21:30, followed by the races at 21:50 and 22:15, mainland Portugal time.

At Hockenheim, Rúben earned the right to arrive as the favourite. Gonçalo still has two races to overturn that status. Behind them, nobody needs permission to join the fight.

Tonight, Road Atlanta brings the Radical SR3 Trophy to a close. The lead already has an owner; the trophy does not.
